Want to know more?
I learned early on how important post processing film and photographs in a darkroom was to creating beautiful exhibition quality prints. About 10 years ago I gave up printing in a conventional darkroom when Epson released the first Archival quality inkjet printer (Epson 2000P) and have not looked back. I found not only did I have more control using Adobe Photoshop, but I no longer had to work in a darkroom or be exposed to noxious chemicals. My digital prints looked better and more saturated then what I could produce in a darkroom. As a multimedia specialist if I could only own one software program - it would be Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is not for the faint of heart, it is expensive and it can be challenging to learn, but it is also the best there is when it comes to image manipulation. There are alternatives for sure (Elements, Lightroom, GIMP) - but if you care deeply about your photography and want to control the appearance and all aspects of your final image - then Photoshop is the best solution available today and my workshops will show you how to make your images look the best they can.
I can teach you how to use Photoshop to achieve better looking images in a few days. I will also be available to answer your questions while you undertake online training. I have invested a tremendous amount of the time doing thousands of tutorials, reading dozens of books and trying hundreds of photoshop tutorials myself in order to master the program and become a better teacher. I can teach you the most essential elements of how to colour correct and enhance the appearance of your photographs in a tenth of the time it took me to learn them. I teach Photoshop workshops regularly and use the program almost every day in my work so I have an intimate knowledge of the program and have used every version since its inception. I have taken what I believe to be the most useful tutorials for photographers and put them into these online workshops. If you are able to visit me in Calgary - you can also take the workshops in my studio for the same price.
I have tried video tutorials on other web sites and some have been good, but most have been disappointing. I have found that it is important to have a set of notes with step by step instructions when following along with the videos and it is also nice to be able to contact the instructor when you have a question. In my online workshops you can contact me via email or phone and I will walk you through any problem you might have following the tutorials. I also offer the opportunity to receive $100 off the price of my in studio workshops if you decide to take one in the future, though I doubt you will need to. If you should have any questions about these online workshops feel free to contact me with your questions and please view the free sample lesson below.
FAQ: Do I need to own Adobe Photoshop CS4 to take the online course?
You will need to either own, purchase or download a 30 day free trial version of Photoshop CS4 in order to complete these tutorials. If you are a student, teacher or are taking a course at a college or University inquire about the ability to purchase an educational version of Photoshop at a significantly reduced price.
FAQ: What if I own an earlier version of Photoshop - can I follow along with your online tutorials?
YES you can but Photoshop's interface changes slightly with each version as do some of the features that are available. Most of the CS4 tutorials shown can be completed with Photoshop CS, CS2 or CS3, but some versions of RAW files may not open in an older version of Adobe Camera RAW and some features in Adobe Camera RAW are not available in earlier versions. If you own an earlier version you can download a 30 day free trial version of Photoshop CS4 or consider upgrading your software. When Photoshop CS5 becomes available, I will test each tutorial and or modify these tutorials to accommodate the new version.
FAQ: If I own another program like Adobe Elements or Lightroom will the course be helpful?
Some of the features will be similar, but frankly the controls, panels etc. are located in different locations so I would not recommend the course for those using Elements or other programs unless you planned on upgrading to the full version of photoshop in the near future.
FAQ: Do you teach a course on Lightroom or Elements?
No - I own both programs and they are good value for the money, but are too limiting in what they do and once you drive a Ferrari (Photoshop) it's very had to go back and drive a volkswagen beetle - though both will get you to your destination. Lightroom does not offer the ability to use masks and many other features I teach using photoshop.
FAQ: I have heard about free programs like GIMP that resemble photoshop - are they any good?
GIMP is a fantastic image editing program and it is totally free - its hard to beat free! Problem is there is not a lot of books, tutorials and learning materials available. There are no college courses and it is not a program employers ask for. Feature wise - it's not as powerful as Photoshop - but for those that have no money - I strongly recommend it, but for the most part you will be on your own when it comes to learning or you can visit their web site: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials.
FAQ: I have heard that photoshop is difficult to learn and I am just amateur is Photoshop overkill?
If you shoot primarily with point and shoot camera -then perhaps photoshop is overkill. It comes down to how serious you are about photography. For many, programs like Adobe Elements or Lightroom are good enough. With more complex software a good course & good instructor can help you learn faster. Some instructors are better then others and different people have different learning styles. Nothing in my opinion beats individual or small group instruction where you get to work on your own images and have someone available to help you. The next best thing is to follow along with step by step videos that you can stop, pause an rewind. The videos don't explain how to do something - they show you and most of us learn quicker this way.
FAQ: I live in the country and only have a slow Internet connection is this going to be a problem taking your online course?
It might be,and if it is I would be happy to send you a set of notes along with a DVD that includes all the image files and Quicktime movie clips you can play directly on your computer.
