A Quick Guide to the Best Places to Photograph in Kananaskis by Robert Berdan 2014. Kananaskis is a provincial park about an hour drive from Calgary adjacent to Banff National Park. Most visitors to Calgary head straight to Banff National park and miss the many scenic visitas and wildlife that Kananaskis park has to offer. For instance you are much more likely to see Moose or Grizzly bears in Kananaskis than Banff National Park. Unlike Banff this area is less crowded and does not require a park pass in order for you to visit. Most locations in the park can be accessed by road within hour and half drive from Calgary and there are many hiking trails where you many not see any other visitors. If you are heading to Banff and have an extra day consider spending one day visiting Kananaskis. This qick-guide will show you where the most accessible scenic vistas are. I have included two maps showing their locations and spots where I have frequently photographed specific wildlife. Common wildlife include: moose, deer, bighorn sheep, elk, grouse, and pikas. Grizzly bears can sometimes be encountered next to the highway feeding on dandelions in June and berries in autumn. Early morning is the best time to photograph wildlife but be sure to pull well over to the side of the road if you stop along the highway or you could encounter tempermental park rangers.
