Description: Are you looking to capture the perfect action shot? Take Sports Photography and learn what is needed to create successful individual, and team sports photographs. The emphasis of the course will be on equipment and photographic techniques. Course consists of 4 lectures and 2 field trips. Assignments are followed up with critiques of student work.
Prerequisite(s): PHOT 200 is recommended.
Course Evaluation: Assignments 100% - evalauated on a Pass/No Pass basis.
Attendance at all classes and field trips is mandatory. Learners who miss more then 20% of classes may be withdrawn from the course. There will be two mandatory field trips - see www.mysait.ca

1. Equipment for Sports Photography
Learning Outcome: Students will be able to discuss and select appropriate photography equipment and photographic settings for sports photography.
Define what constitutes a sport and note different requirments for indoor vs outdoor sports
Identify the features of the following lenses: normal, short telephoto, long telephoto, wide and ultra wide angle, teleconverters.
Explain the speed of a lens and why having a "fast lens" is important in sports photography
Describe the different types of glass and which ones result in sharper images
Explain benefits of using tripods and monopods
Compare the advantages of different camera storage options: photo vests, camera packs, fanny or sling packs
Discuss metering and various settings for sports photography (spot, evaluative, matrix, center weighted).
Explain how shutter speed can affect the picture - how to create motion blur or freeze action
Explain depth of field and how to control it using F-stops
Compare different methods of focus: selective focus, trap (prefocus), follow focus and panning during action

Photo Assignments - Due on Monday, slide show numbered .jpg files or PDF
1. Individual athlete photo and\ or one team or group photo - 1
2. Action photos - freeze action pictures at the peak moment fast shutter speed - 2
3. Action photos demonstrating motion blurr e.g. by panning - 2
4. 5 other sports images of any sporting activity - slide show of a sport event or portfolio of work - 5
Total of 10 images you will show and present in class for critique and discussion (images .jpg format, 72 dpi, if you can add your name and copyright that would be great) Size full screen i.e. 1024, 1920 pixels in width. Images do not have to be processed in any image editor, though if you can please do.
